7 million couples in the US are in long distance relationships.

Research

We spoke with women about their most intimate moments - with their vibrators. We wanted to know what they used, where, with whom, and how often. We quickly learned that we needed to change the scope of our project from focusing on couples to accommodating women flying solo.

“I don’t like sites or products that feel like they’re pandering to me.”

We found that women didn’t like sites or products that that used a lot of light pink and purple or hearts. It felt patronizing and didn’t take into account what they really wanted.

“I don’t keep an arsenal of sex toys so any connected vibrator needs to - first and foremost - be a good vibrator that I can use alone.”

Intimate moments don’t always need to be shared with a partner. While we want connecting with someone else to be a seamless and delightful experience, our first priority needed to be an easy-to-use vibrator.

“I typically enjoy my personal time right before bed - in the dark.”

Using the device in the dark meant that white screens were strictly off limits - nothing is less sexy than getting blinded when you’re trying to get it on.

Concept Development

Vibease sketch sessions centered on defining the app's structure so that it was easy to navigate and access all the features of the device. It was important to have the device controls be immediately accessible upon opening the app. Many different interaction models for controlling the devices were explored in sketch from the draggable pulser that we ultimately went with to sliders and up/down arrows.

Information Architecture

The Vibease architecture has four distinct sections. Play is the vibrator's remote control. Users can increase or decrease the intensity of the vibration here and save sessions that they enjoyed or would like to send to a partner. Playlist is where all saved vibration sessions can be accessed as well as music or erotic audio books that have vibration set to them. Lastly, Duet is the app's chat feature where users can text their partners and share control of their device.

Gestural Control

There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re typing into a calculator during a vibration session. Vibease’s gestural interface allows you to just swipe up or down to control the intensity of vibration - meaning it can be operated with one hand and your eyes closed so there’s nothing in between you and your fantasy.
