Problem

Growing marijuana recreationally is legal in 6 states and medical marijuana cultivation is legal in 11.

Despite increasing legality, starting to grow marijuana is nearly impossible and creating consistent results for yourself or your patient is even harder. Snaphash solves that problem by providing advice tailored for your strain and the desired effects.

Research

We interviewed hobbyist growers about the pitfalls of their process. While many of them feel like they get a satisfactory product, they’re often left scouring the internet for the answers to their questions. There’s no single reliable resource for them to turn to and they often have to piece together how-tos themselves.

Concept Development

Snaphash ideation focused on defining the system architecture and how the three main components of the app could work together harmoniously: social community, plant tracking, and plant diagnosis. As the main goal was to get users to take photos so that we could build a database of images and diagnoses we made the new photo button very prominent and accessible on all screens.

Information Architecture

The Snaphash architecture has 5 sections: Explore, Garden, Photo/Snap Assist, Inbox, and Profile. Later iterations of the architecture maintain these sections but reduce the prominence of the Inbox and Profile on the screen so that we could employ a non-footer navigation method. In the final design, Explore and Garden are equally important and can be accessed simply by swiping left and right while Photo/Snap Assist can be accessed from either screen. Profile and notifications has moved up to the upper left on both screens.

Snaphash diagnoses plant problems using only your phone’s camera. Snaphash’s image recognition algorithm is constantly improving through community input. Whenever a user posts a picture of their plant to the forum and gets answers to their questions, Snaphash logs the response and builds it into the automated diagnoses.
